Privacy Policy

Last updated 7 September 2026

The Great Translation Game is operated by Language Innovation LLC ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect, who we share it with, and what you can ask us to do about it. We've tried to describe what actually happens rather than cover every hypothetical.

What we collect

Who else sees it

We don't sell your data or share it for advertising. We do rely on a small number of service providers to run the site, and the following is a complete list:

We may also disclose information if we're legally required to — for example a valid legal request from law enforcement.

AI features

Some parts of the game use OpenAI's models. All of them are optional: nothing is sent to OpenAI unless you press a button or submit a form that asks for it.

We don't send your email address, username or account ID with any of these requests. OpenAI receives the text and nothing that identifies you to them, though as with any service provider they will see the network request itself.

OpenAI's API terms state that content submitted through their API isn't used to train their models, and that it's retained only for a limited period for abuse monitoring. That's their commitment rather than ours, so treat the same advice as applies to imported text: don't put anything confidential into these features.

We cache AI responses so that the same question isn't paid for twice. The cache is keyed by a one-way hash of the input and isn't linked to your account.

Text-to-speech

The audio playback in the game uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis, not ours. Some browsers — Chrome in particular — send the text to be spoken to their own servers to generate higher-quality voices. That's between your browser and its vendor, but it's worth knowing if you're playing sentences you'd rather keep private.

No trackers

We don't use any third-party JavaScript. No analytics, no advertising or audience-tracking scripts, no session recording, no social media widgets. All the code that runs in your browser is served by us.

Cookies and local storage

We use a cookie to keep you signed in, and to remember a small amount of state between pages. We also store your light/dark theme preference in your browser's local storage. None of this is used for tracking or advertising.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and the content you've created for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, we delete your account record and the challenges, sentences, notes and phrases attached to it. Server logs and email delivery records held by our providers expire on their own schedules, typically within a few months. We may keep anonymous, aggregated statistics that can't be traced back to you, and cached AI responses, which aren't linked to any account.

Your choices

You can ask us to:

You can also stop any of the optional emails we send. Every reminder, weekly summary and occasional email carries an unsubscribe link that works in one click, without signing in. Account emails — confirming your address, resetting your password — can't be turned off, because they're how the account works.

Email hello@thegreattranslationgame.com and we'll sort it out. If you're in the UK, EU or another region with data protection rights, you're entitled to exercise them regardless of where we're based, and we'll honour them.

Children

The Great Translation Game isn't intended for children under 13, and we ask you to confirm you're old enough when you sign up. If you believe a child has created an account, please email hello@thegreattranslationgame.com and we'll remove it.

Security

We serve the site over HTTPS, store passwords only as hashes, and take reasonable measures to protect your information. No service can promise perfect security, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If the change is significant, we'll email you about it rather than relying on you to notice.
